The exhibit 鈥淩eckon & Riddle: The Prints of D.L. Simmons鈥� will open in the University of Tampa鈥檚 Scarfone/Hartley Gallery on Friday, March 14, and run through Friday, April 18, with a reception 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 21.

Simmons鈥� large-scale prints explore how personal memory translates into collective experience, with each work acting as a portal into shared stories and histories. Simmons drew inspiration from Jacques Derrida鈥檚 philosophy of deconstruction and Maurice Merleau-Ponty鈥檚 exploration of perception as an embodied, active experience.

"My work is the physical embodiment of an emotional experience and is an investigation of the self told in the media of printmaking,鈥� said Simmons in his artist statement.

The exhibit is curated by Assistant Professor of Art and Design Kaia Magnusen. Simmons鈥� artistic decisions, 鈥渟uch as color, composition and medium, function like a Greek chorus that provide insights into the work鈥檚 meaning and the artist鈥檚 psyche, but do not dictate the experience for the viewers,鈥� Magnusen said.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The Scarfone/Hartley Gallery is located at 310 N. Boulevard and is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 1-4 p.m. For more information, contact Jocelyn Boigenzahn, galleries director, at jboigenzahn@ut.edu.
