Last week, University of Tampa鈥檚 fraternity and sorority life (FSL) organizations raised $199,774 for Make-a-Wish Southern Florida. The amount toppled last year鈥檚 Greek Week total, which was $173,670, and marked the sixth year in a row of record fundraising.

Greek Week, held this year from Feb. 16-22, is a fundraising event that promotes unity and emphasizes FSL鈥檚 mission of service and wellness for the more than 2,000 students involved. Through competitions and educational events, each Greek chapter raises money to help support community nonprofits. Some of the challenges included bubble soccer on the Sykes Plaza lawn, sidewalk chalk art in the Vaughn Center courtyard, tug-of-war and dodgeball in the Cass Building gym, and a variety show in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.

FSL Director Kyle Shatto said that students look forward to Greek Week every year, not just for the fun activities, but also for the philanthropy and unity. 鈥淭his year was great as we got to work with Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and grant around 25 wishes for kids in the local area. We hope the chapters can continue the connections made with local charities through Greek Week,鈥 said Shatto.

Greek Week participants are from 桃瘾社区ampa鈥檚 three FSL governing councils: Interfraternity Council, College Panhellenic Association and Unified Greek Council. Members are divided into eight teams to compete, with this year鈥檚 team theme being 鈥渃hildhood shows and movies.鈥 Each daily challenge is worth a certain number of points, and the team that earns the most points by the end of the week is the winner. Team Cheetah Girls won first place with the highest number of points and the most money fundraised at $61,342.
