桃瘾社区 proudly presents 鈥淥ut of Context: Jason Hulfish REMIX,鈥 a student-led exhibition opening Nov. 1 and running through Dec. 12 at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery. This unique showcase offers a fresh look at the work of local artist Jason Hulfish, thoughtfully reimagined by Art+Design students Ian Carruthers 鈥25 (B.A. in Museum Studies and B.A. in Philosophy) and Lennon Chrones 鈥25 (B.A in Design with a minor in Film).
Hulfish, a Clearwater native and principal artist of Grand Theming Studios, is known for his work with Disney, Universal Studios and TV shows like 鈥淓xtreme Makeover: Home Edition鈥 and 鈥淭reehouse Masters.鈥 The Scarfone/Hartley Gallery recently featured his work in an exhibition that ran from August to early October. The artwork had not yet been returned when it was left with no home due to hurricane damage at Hulfish鈥檚 studio. Seizing this as an experiential learning opportunity, Hulfish entrusted his artwork to Carruthers and Chrones, and, under the supervision of Director of College Galleries Jocelyn Boigenzahn, challenged them to re-imagine the exhibition and bring new life to the display.
In the 鈥淩EMIX鈥 exhibition, Carruthers and Chrones have completely rearranged the display, asking visitors to consider how the placement and interaction between pieces shift their impact and interpretation, just as the original 鈥淥ut of Context鈥 exhibition challenged viewers to experience and examine the aesthetic qualities of Hulfish鈥檚 site-specific sculptures in a gallery setting. In this reimagined exhibition, the student curators invite visitors to think about how the curatorial process can change how one experiences the same work of art in the same space.
The Scarfone/Hartley Gallery is on the University of Tampa campus at the R.K. Bailey Art Studios, 310 N. Boulevard. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There is no charge for admission.
