University of Tampa’s Institute for Sales Excellence Renamed in Honor of Mike and Amy Southard

The University of Tampa’s Institute for Sales Excellence, which prepares the next generation of sales leaders, has been renamed thanks to a generous donation from longtime University supporters.

The University of Tampa’s Institute for Sales Excellence, which prepares the next generation of sales leaders, has been renamed thanks to a generous donation from longtime University supporters. Effective immediately, the institute will be renamed the Southard Institute for Sales Excellence, honoring Mike and Amy Southard.

The donation and renaming come as the institute moves into its new location in the University’s newest building, the Grand Center. It is located on the first floor and includes offices, learning spaces, a conference room and classroom.

While the Southards’ gift includes support for the building of the center and institute operations, it also includes both the funding of an endowment for student scholarships and providing for student support services.

Mike Southard said that he has always thought sales skills are a critical part of any student’s education, even for those not planning to enter the sales field.

“Think about it — all your interactions as a child and adult are convincing someone to see your way and get something you want,” Southard said. “This center will give all students the opportunity to learn more about professional selling skills that will benefit them throughout their entire lives.”

In addition to this gift, Mike and Amy previously committed to funding multiple four-year scholarships that are awarded to students who wouldn't be able to join the community without financial assistance. In 2019, the rebuilt Riverside Center, now the Southard Family Building, was renamed in their honor, as well. Mike, a University of Tampa alumnus of the class of 1982, is currently the vice chair of the University of Tampa Board of Trustees, serves on the executivecommittee and is chair of the Audit Committee. He is the founder and CEO of Elvisridge Capital, a private investment firm that invests in small to medium-size manufacturing companies and owns currently five operating companies in Florida, Kentucky and Nevada.

The Southards met as University of Tampa students. Their daughter, Ashley, graduated from the University of Tampa in 2012.

“The Southard Institute for Sales Excellence is another example of the kind of education that ampa is known for — providing innovative, collaborative spaces where we prepare students for success and graduate the skilled professionals that businesses need to prosper.”

The goal of the Southard Institute for Sales Excellence, which was established in 2017 as part of the Sykes College of Business, is to prepare students for careers in professional business-to-business sales; encourage networking between students and businesses; serve as a staffing resource for regional, national and global firms; and provide learning resources for local and regional businesses.
